On Wednesday I went with Dominic (my brother) to see his flatmate James in the Sheffield Univerity Big Band. I can’t remember ever seeing a live Jazz Swing/Swing Jazz? band in my life before, so this was a new experience.

It was packed: a nice restaurant Cubana at Leopold Square made for the perfect atmosphere. Obviously I didn’t buy any drinks so I had to lean against the bar eventually.

The band were tight. And not tight like how rock bands are ‘tight’. Really fucking tight. But they have to be! Otherwise you wouldn’t get the spanking thrill/fever/blast that everyone in that room came home with. The singers were a spectacle as well: Orla, and two others who I don’t know delivered a fantastic performance.

It looks like they have a swing-dancing night on every Wednesday in there. They were on before the big band, with a nice dude teaching everyone how to do it. Nice.
