Have you ever prowled into the city’s nightlife without wetting the whistle? Have you ever crept into a club completely cold? Because when you do, you’ll find yourself completely server muted; unable to compete with the hoard of in sync punters shouting through the air. The environment around you becomes loud and impenetrable. If you want to have fun in a traditional pop club voyage, drinking is often involuntary.
I personally don’t indulge in town centre clubs. Not because I think it makes me better (which it does) but because it’s an environment where drinking is so strewn into the status-quo that it makes you a downer if you don’t do it. Whilst there are people who wouldn’t question the act of opting out, the mainstream club goer who is yet to meet you and ask what you’ve had will certainly be questioning and splitting you into a category: “Oh, is it a lifestyle choice?”, “Ah, designated driver eh?” or “Are you pregnant?” Usually the answer is one of the above, but why should it matter?
The free party on new year’s eve made me realise there is a world where that’s irrelevant. Some people drink, that’s great! Some people do other drugs as well, that’s amazing! Many of these might even be necessary for entering the world in the first place. But once you’re in, and you enjoy that kind of music, and you enjoy the thrill of staying awake, it’s no longer necessary. In fact, 69db from Spiral Tribe said in an interview he personally thinks parties should be done without drinking and drugs.

Personally, I’m not old enough to have a damaging relationship with alcohol. Not drinking comes very naturally to me, and a lot of people my age are already becoming very conscious of it. What’s the main reason I avoid drinking though? Well, I suppose it’s a lifestyle choice, I’m often designated driver, and I’m pregnant.
